Many people attribute Frank Lloyd Wright with “fathering” of the modern architectural era but he was just one of many contemporaries that studied at the feet of Louis Sullivan (the coiner of the phrase “form ever follows function,” and, by extension, the architects of the ancient and Renaissance eras. Still, his design for the Guggenheim Museum in New York City is, unarguably, a feat of defiant genius. This squat building has no corners. It is a spiral, so it is technically is simultaneously a six-storied and one floored building. It is a glossy white color, making it completely unexpected and a stark contrast to the dull-colored brick or concrete, elongated, block-shaped buildings of Manhattan that surround it. Even today it is considered quintessential modern architecture.
What makes this even more impressive, particularly to generations of people who grew up with computers and digital design tools is that he designed it without the aid of computer simulations or computations. Today, our architectural innovations seem to be the brainchildren of designers who know how to manipulate construction drawing management tools and high tech graphics programs.
There are some who believe that the computer has done for architecture what the printing press did for literature. It has made it more accessible without taking away the need for innovation and creativity. At the same time there is something to be said for the romanticism of vellum and graphite. Whichever medium these architects used to first “sketch” their visions, one thing is for sure: modern architecture really dresses up a skyline.
